Eddy, you gave me nightmares when you first posted about, but also awareness. I doubt that people can imagine how fast things could happen, especially in big, populated cities.

Withnail's avatar

Right. I was out walking yesterday and I was thinking how strange it is that we live in row after row of basically identical apartments, essentially rabbit hutches for humans, all squashed together in these giant places we call cities, and we think it's normal.

I was in the gym today and saw a woman with massive fake tits... a massive fake ass... a tiny waist... and fake lips... she no doubt thinks she is very hot...

FE - Depressing reading. Subscribed. I didn't know about the fuel rods. I know a guy that works at a nuclear power plant that does risk assessment. Will have to ask him what he thinks.

My cousin is head safey engineer at a plant in ontario...when I asked he said this cannot happen.. lot of redundancy....when pressed he said it's unthinkable we'd be fucked

Oh... Please do!! This should be good for the Double Feature sized tub of popcorn

But as this section is related to energy.

PowerPaste is a hydrogen-based fuel developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials (IFAM) in Dresden, Germany.

It results in a benign biproduct / byproduct which may or may not have use

Chemistry 12 is long in the past, but seems like it could be reasonable. I wonder if this could be used in conjunction with synthetic diesel created using the **Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis**

Is it an optimistic statement? Sure. But, this is something that has a little promise to me.

So, snake oil or plausible as a realistic solution for at least one problem?

Fast Eddy's avatar

Why post nonsense like this

Withnail's avatar

It sounds like you haven't grasped the principles of how this all works. You can't synthesise an energy source in a chemical plant and expect that to be viable. I don't need to read the links to instantly know this is garbage and a scam.

JavaKinetic's avatar

When was the last time you tried to use your imagination? Think about solar panels in sunny countries, or hydro power that could capture spare capacity. This is interesting stuff.

A response to why, I suppose is why not. Might as well keep on trying stuff until the very last moment... whenever that this. Pretty soon maybe. Some people like travelling, others like not giving up on their imaginations, or what they are good at. Good on em.

Fast Eddy's avatar

'imagine' = make shit up and believe it.

We do NOT do that here

Withnail's avatar

Think about solar panels in sunny countries, or hydro power that could capture spare capacity.

I have thought about those things, so have numerous other people interested in this topic. Both those things are products of fossil fuels. I would have thought you would know that?

JavaKinetic's avatar

There is no free lunch here. Chemistry is now just about 100% figured out. There have been no discoveries in a very long time. What we are down to is its application.

I thought this was a particularly interesting application as hydrogen is easy to produce, but hard to hold. The idea of being able to capture hydrogen for use much later helps with that variability of energy problem. No leaky pressure tanks!

To clarify.... were boned. We know this. But, why not have a bit of fun on the way out? I would hate to not give innovators a crack at saving the world... as futile as it might be.

I figure. Go for it. Learn something... maybe we will get lucky, and it gets paired with something also not yet quite figured out.... and the Great Filter gets pushed back another few weeks.

Withnail's avatar

Hydrogen is not easy to produce. Producing it consumes a lot of energy and (usually) uses up natural gas we could far better use for many other vital purposes.

Gas Axe's avatar

Hydrogen is hard to bottle up.

Withnail's avatar

There are just so many problems with it.

Gas Axe's avatar

I run my old land cruiser on LPG. I figure I can find these BBQ tanks at every house.

It is the main cooking fuel for my country and easy to get. I have lots of it on hand. Stores forever. Methane would be possible with a high pressure pump but that's not going to happen.

I'll just ride a mule or mnt bike when I run out of fuel. My son has a bunch of EV assist bikes.

You should turn the local Fast Eddy storefront into a Collapsemporium, a museum and gift shop to showcase "the collapse of complex society, the fallout of spent fuel rods and the chaos, cannibalism and extinction that follows."

How not to be a moron and a martyr..

Inbar Lieberman, hero security coordinator of Kibbutz Nir Am.

“They heard the shots and made contact on their own with other members of the standby unit and with Inbal — and they understood that they were told to be on standby.

“But Inbal made a decision not to wait and be jumped operationally. In fact, the fact that they did it early prevented dozens of casualties,” she added.

Lieberman killed five terrorists by herself, while the others gunned down 20 more over four hours as they turned Nir Am into an impenetrable fortress — while nearby kibbutzim suffered heavy losses, Walla News reported."

The two things that will make this really really real.

1) Choke the strait

2) Hit each others refineries

The first appears to be completed. If that stays the case for more than a couple weeks, I'm guessing if anyone takes out a Navy, then the second thing happens quickly.

Then starvation and face ripping??

Yes...time will tell....I might add that having seen irrefutable evidence that the Ukraine war is fake....it surprises me that anyone would just swallow the iran story....anyone see updates on the Venezuela invasion....it's getting confusing...are we at war Oceania or east asia...or both? Good education and information Eddy. 🏆

I now understand why you are writing the way you do. Thank you for writing this personal history and what you had to endure.

I have had a cush life. Lived in the best of times. It was fkn awesome.

My grandfathers experienced much of what you went through. They made a point of telling me every detail. They said it would happen in my lifetime. I listened to them hoping they were wrong, but prepared just on case. They told me exactly what you did in you did. I have it covered. ✔️ ✔️ ✔️...

I gather we are 4-8 triggers away ATM. 50%.

There are 4000 Spent Fuel Ponds Around the Globe…

If you don’t cool the spent fuel, the temperature will rise and there may be a swift chain reaction that leads to spontaneous combustion–an explosion and fire of the spent fuel assemblies. Such a scenario would emit radioactive particles into the atmosphere. Pick your poison. Fresh fuel is hotter and more radioactive, but is only one fuel assembly. A pool of spent fuel will have dozens of assemblies.

One report from Sankei News said that there are over 700 fuel assemblies stored in one pool at Fukushima. If they all caught fire, radioactive particles—including those lasting for as long as a decade—would be released into the air and eventually contaminate the land or, worse, be inhaled by people. “To me, the spent fuel is scarier. All those spent fuel assemblies are still extremely radioactive,” Dalnoki-Veress says.

It has been known for more than two decades that, in case of a loss of water in the pool, convective air cooling would be relatively ineffective in such a “dense-packed” pool. Spent fuel recently discharged from a reactor could heat up relatively rapidly to temperatures at which the zircaloy fuel cladding could catch fire and the fuel’s volatile fission product, including 30-year half-life Cs, would be released. The fire could well spread to older spent fuel. The long-term land-contamination consequences of such an event could be significantly worse than those from Chernobyl. Source

Japan’s chief cabinet secretary called it “the devil’s scenario.” Two weeks after the 11 March 2011 earthquake and tsunami devastated the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, causing three nuclear reactors to melt down and release radioactive plumes, officials were bracing for even worse. They feared that spent fuel stored in pools in the reactor halls would catch fire and send radioactive smoke across a much wider swath of eastern Japan, including Tokyo. Source

Estimates of the cancer burden in Europe from radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl accident Source (Note: The Chernobyl accident was relatively minor, involved no spent fuel ponds, and was controlled by pouring cement onto the reactor. This was breaking down so a few years back they re-entombed.)

“However, many of the radioactive elements in spent fuel have long half-lives. For example, plutonium-239 has a half-life of 24,000 years, and plutonium-240 has a half-life of 6,800 years. Because it contains these long half-lived radioactive elements, spent fuel must be isolated and controlled for thousands of years.” Source

It does not matter how remote you are, the jet stream and ocean currents will circulate these toxic cancer-causing substances around the globe. They will be picked up by convection and pour deadly rain on your crop and water supply.

Nobody survives the collapse of civilization. This will be an extinction event.

Why do you want humans to survive? We have wiped out thousands of other species... don't you think it's appropriate that we exit the planet (before we pave the entire thing over)

Ùna's avatar

No i dont want humanity to end .and i believe enough will survive to start again .to give up is suicidal .i cant give in to that .

Fast Eddy's avatar

There is no choice. This is an extinction event.

Good riddance to this vile cancer on the planet

Be prepared then. I wouldn't worry about the spent fuel ponds though, they don't matter. A little bit of radiation is no big deal. There might be time to just dump it all in the sea before the collapse, problem solved.

Fast Eddy's avatar

Maybe starving hordes will eat the spent fuel?

Sadly that won't solve the problem... cuz what they shit out has a half life of thousands of years....

JavaKinetic's avatar

I think this is the survival strategy. Hold on for dear life... knowing full well we die at the end.

In fact, this is the first thing that must be accepted. First, come to terms that you probably wont live through the ordeal. Once that is accepted, you can concentrate on taking the necessary chances which may lead to salvation.

Page one of the Survival Guide: Come to terms with the situation, now innovate. Its amazing what is discovered when there is seemingly no way out.

Fast Eddy's avatar

The reason for the Ultimate Extinction Plan ... is because they know what humans are capable of when desperate.... they will kill and eat each other.... then when the human meat is gone they will go extinct

This is exactly why they are going to exterminate us before the collapse

Withnail's avatar

Some will survive but that's not really the point. Industrial civilisation will be over forever.

JavaKinetic's avatar

Good. It wasnt making most people very happy anyway.
