TEMU asked me for a review on a tape measure I purchased:

Excellent quality. Same as you would get if you purchased in Bunnings but a fraction of the price.

Thank you China for subsidizing the price and destroying the Australian economy!!! Hopefully by supporting TEMU I can help collapse the global economy haha

And now the algorithms have started inundating tabloid news in Europe with scary-scary stories from holiday hotspots, every day. The words "vacation paradise" MUST be in the headline, coupled with (take your pick) shark attacks, riots, rape, kidnapping, rat infestation, garbage, and sewage spilling into the sea.

Come June/July, the weather maps will turn blood red (at 23 degrees) and, whatever the actual weather condition (sun, rain, storm, wind - doesn't matter), the headlines will scream, APOCALYPSE!!! Same thing every year.

Oh, and tech servers will go tits up at airports all over the UK, leaving travellers in "living hell" as they queue for 72 hours and miss their flights and sleep on the terminal floor.

This is how the USSR was defeated. China is starting to have that same odour about it. The most important quality of a successful country is where people have property rights, and trust that their investment will always be theirs. When that goes missing, corruption is all encompassing, and then you just have to wait.

Expand full comment
Withnail's avatar

Do you imagine that you have 'property rights'? You don't. China is not going to be defeated by decaying deindustrialised crap holes such as the USA, Canada or UK.

More Signs Of China's Decline

More signs have emerged testifying to the severity of China's financial woes. Local governments seem to have become so cash-strapped that they have resorted to paying their bills with unfinished and unbought apartments left by the nation's ongoing property crisis.

As these problems festered, local governments, now denied most of the cash flow from land sales, found themselves unable to meet their obligations on the debts they had incurred during the boom years and also their civic obligations to their populations. Not only were lenders asked to wait, but local governments also held back on payments to contractors for all sorts of services, including utilities, garbage collection, street cleaning, and repair. In some cases, matters got so severe that civic employees—teachers, medical staff, police, and firefighters—had to wait for their pay.

In the absence of cash to pay their bills, developers and local governments have resorted to the only thing they have in abundance to pay their bills: unfinished and unoccupied apartments. Three examples should give a sense of what is happening.

Changji City, China, has discharged the equivalent of $25 million in unpaid gas bills to Xinjiang East Universe Gas with some 260 unfinished apartments in what was originally planned as a luxury housing development.

Shanghai Urban Architecture Design has taken 115 apartments to settle the equivalent of some $10 million it was due.

Police departments in China’s Dejiang, Yuping, and Sinan counties have settled the equivalent of some $10 million owed to a software developer with the transfer of apartments from a failed property developer.

Is it just more theatre?

We all have the best seats in the house for the greatest show our masters have ever put on.

From 2 buildings in NY that turned to dust and blew away across the Hudson into NJ to this ridiculous "pandemic ".

Try and keep up people. I suspect that even FE repeated the story he was told by MSM that those towers fell down. Was it just Paul Downey and Dr Judy Wood, in the whole f**king world who noticed that they blew away.

Start with something simple. What about the great relationship JFK had with Khrushchev and how they got together to extract missiles from Turkey and we were asked to called it the Cuban Missile Crisis? As a 15 year old at the time it seemed like all the grown ups were shitting themselves over pure theatre.

I've had a life time observing the stupidity of people but still it surprises me. Oh dear.

It looked to me that only two buildings turned to dust and blew away on that particular Tuesday. The third building was wired for demolition and collapsed it most certainly didn't blow away.

Punctuation? No I missed out on all that stuff. I realised really early on that if you wanted to make any real money that maths and physics was the way to go. My 1st degree was Structural Engineering so when I say one building fell down and 2 blew away it is with the benefit of 40years in the industry, and if you could for a second see through your dense fog of hatred and look at the evidence you to would see that I'm correct.

Please seek help immediately as your hatred for the world could well consuming you.

You can't compete with China. A single Chinese city outproduces your whole economy.

Expand full comment

You cannot compete when they subsidize their exports

Withnail's avatar

Cheap coal subsidises their exports. Surely you know how things work by now.

Expand full comment
Fast Eddy's avatar

It does ... but that does not make a $40 coffee maker price at $8 ... including air freight from China.

The CCP is subsidizing all exports from coffee machines to EVs.... they are selling below cost... the air freight alone is more than $8.... I just ordered ear buds from an online retailer in Australia -- the shipping cost was $14... and it ain't being shipped from China

You are really retarded if you don't get it how that coffee maker got to 40$. But what can one expect from a spoon feed anglo saxon. Ups. I forgot. Anglo saxon retard. Though that would make it a pleonasm. Anyway, hopefully, despite your severe retardation, you'll be able to get it.

Lately, Temu has been awarding customers 80% rebates. Practically giving stuff away for free.

Personally I have no handyman skills, but I can see that a lot of hardware and electrical items, car accessories etc. can be had at great deals in the Temu app.

On the other hand, their home decor stuff looks weirdly reverse-engineered; like someone showed up at a factory, shoved a pic on their phone in the manager's face and said, Can you make this for me. The end products do look like prison labour to me, to be honest. If you locked me up and handed me a bunch of tools, that's the quality and finesse I might come up with.

Expand full comment
Fast Eddy's avatar

I have purchased thousands of dollars from Temu ... only a handful of items would I consider shoddy.

What is happening is that factories that make OEM gear for foreign companies are simply removing the foreign logos and selling the same quality products at a fraction of the cost

The question is - why are countries allowing this gear in without hammering them with tariffs?

I have posited the reason above -- this obviously helps people deal with inflation ... obviously it also wrecks the retail sector

We are very close to total collapse... this is a canary

ivanislav's avatar

Eddy doesn't understand that China cannot subsidize some industries without being profitable in other areas. So what if they subsidize this or that item? We waste plenty of money too, and don't even have the capacity to manufacture at scale like they do.

this is not about subsidies... it's about why they are mass subsidizing....

China, facing record youth unemployment, says it will stop releasing data about it

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/china-suspends-data-youth-unemployment-rcna99929

Big Picture - China is in the same situation as America just prior to the GFC... except far far worse... the property market is a complete disaster.... unlike America where the homes were at least built... in China there were NOT.... and you pay the full purchase price up front ... so these fellas are servicing mortgages on these homes https://fasteddynz.substack.com/p/china-120000000-unfinished-homes/

Everyone knew that building ghost cities would not end well...

How many products do you think are on Temu https://www.temu.com/... millions? This is ghost cities only different... They are providing enormous subsidies on a huge swathe of the retail industry... they are selling products at BELOW the shipping costs!!!!

And you think that makes sense? It makes sense just like building ghost towns makes sense.. or how offering Liar Loans in America made sense

It is a symptom of DESPERATION.

They are doing whatever it takes to delay the ultimate reckoning.

Trying to pass this off as BAU... is ridiculous
