Fusion needs Tritium, a hydrogen isotope which has the energy density, and reaction level which would be necessary for the Fusion Reactors we have envisaged so far. We don't have that on Earth, at least not easily found. However, it is on the Moon.

So, we need two things.

1) A moon mining program (See movie: Moon)

2) An actual working Fusion Reactor

Put the two together, and BOOM, we are star borne. Its interesting that we don't actually have any of the stuff needed to operate a viable reactor here. The CANDU reactors are able to manufacture some of this material... and that is what is being used for testing these limited reactions. Apparently, the most expensive matter on the planet.

Obviously, humans were meant to get off this damned rock. But, at the moment, its looking like we are missing an important step or technology or something.

It's impossible to mine the moon. Moon dust gets everywhere, absolutely everywhere, and it destroys machinery and airlocks. It's jagged and sharp because it's never been eroded like on earth. You're not going to space. You'll die miserably like the rest of us in the collapse.

I will do you one better. Airlocks are not possible in space. Rubber and anything pliable will out gas, and expand. It becomes immediately useless. The only locks that work are metal on metal. But problem is, they are only one use. Cold welding will fuse similar metals. As soon as different metals are used, expansion issues occur, and once again, failure occurs.

Our earthbound technologies do not work in space. Airlocks will need something exotic.

I don't know what this 'torr' thing is about but airlocks work in space including on the moon before the dust erodes them. I remember someone crowing about how duct tape couldn't work in space, might have been you actually. I discovered they use a special space version.

I love the Apollo missions. I still do. This is because, it is a fascinating story. Either it happened, and we don't know how, or it didn't happen, and we have the most incredible cover up in history.

Its been 50 years, and it very much appears that there is a hard barrier from about 600km and up for many reasons.

There is a missing technology here for sure. Fusion gives us heat. We use heat to spin turbines, and then they turn motion to electricity. Right there, it is not viable. Heat direct to electricity is a requirement for fusion to be viable.

So, fusion will not work. This is disappointing, as it was held out as that ... once we figure out fusion, weve got it made. We dont have the fuel for it, or the subsequent technologies to convert energy to electricity at 80% or greater.

It takes more energy to contain the fusion reaction than it produces. The neutrons from the reaction also turn whatever physical container is used (magnetic forces are also necessary) into Swiss cheese.

That's a good question. I feel like there are probably endless layers of sub particles to discover beyond the atomic particles we already know about. We'll likely never really get to the bottom of it all before science ends along with our civilisation and of course ourselves.

You should explore the idea some have that our ability to even harness nuclear fission is bunk or way harder than we are told. The entire thing could be another American Moon type yarn.

Take nukes, what makes me wonder about their existence is at the peak cold war there were supposedly ~60-80k warheads. I find it odd that with the amount of people and personalities involved never one vaporizing accident or rouge application. Sure there were near misses but never a news line with, whoops such and such city was destroyed today by accidental training gone wrong or a psycho pilot, etc.

Given most military’s carnage filled training records…I find the near flawless global handling of nukes a noodle scratcher.

Art Berman appears to have lost the plot. He says Peak Oil is still way in the distance because no one accounted for Shale. It has saved us from catastrophe. He doesn't realize that Shale, Fracking, Tar Sands, Wind and Solar only exist because of debt. Take away the subsidies and all of that goes away. It just isn't the same and efficient as oil and that is getting harder to come by or we wouldn't even consider Shale, fracking, tar sands, wind or solar.

I have to confess that that tokamak looks really sexy. A device that could give you a jolt like nothing ever. Yes, dear, I realize that it is not meant to represent a sex organ but that is just how it appears, and what can one do about that. As for the Tritium, every nuclear weapon reportedly has to have its dose of Tritium topped up every 13 years to stay healthy and bangy. Imagine being the lad or lassie charged with that duty. Or if you're in a naughty mood you could always go sell some to the Iranians, who are pretending to build a nuclear weapon while they publicly deny all. What a world to be born into. No wonder the Visitors are repelled by humanity's antics, and want nothing to do with us (unless they do ... therein lies the great and frightening mystery).

What a fucking idiot that man is. Small nuclear reactors solve absolutely nothing, clearly. It is not in any way easier to build a bunch of small reactors than it is to build one big one. It's much harder and it's also much harder to manage them, fuel them (special fuel required) and connect them to grid infrastructure.
