People don't realize how civilization is on a knifes edge between order and chaos. In the US it's about 3 weeks with the Just in Time food delivery system. They also don't realize how important oil is to Industrial Civilization. Mostly everyone just takes it for granted. I raise my hand that I do at times. Stop the flow of oil and you watch Industrial Civ quickly go in reverse.

You can't repair or make anything without it, including Solar Panels and Wind Farms. Without oil, trucks don't move, fuel pumps don't work, etc. And yet we have Globalists who are trying to end oil. When the US goes down for the count it will have a domino effect around the world. There's no going back to Little House on the Prairie. That ship has sailed decades ago. What Industrial Civilization is looking at is the Movie: The Road.

A suggestion that might not be so very effective, but a friend did it when his house near Jogjakarta was subjected to break-ins: sprinkle earth from a cemetery around all doors and windows. Whether you believe or not, give it a try. The eerie sensation of death will tend to dissuade vandals.

But not, of course, determined invaders. For that you need booby-traps. A narrow trench around the house, with stakes sticking up and lathered in human shit, covered with branches and leaves, will be a nasty surprise for trespassers. Step on a stake and you're pretty much doomed from the infection. This is one of the cute stunts the Viet Cong used against the American soldiers. Check others out.

One could try to hang dead bodies from trees ... as Kurtz did at his compound ...

But if you have food and a puff of smoke emits from your chimney... the starving hordes will find you ... ignore the bodies (or maybe eat them if they are not rotten)... and kill you - and rape your women

Prepping is a terrible idea.

Humans have one of many thing in common with animals. The sense of smell increases the hungrier you get. Soldiers are taught how to properly cook food in the battlefield so as not to alert the enemy who might be just as hungry.

Thanks, Fast Eddie, for making Collapse so real. You got me thinking about 'Used-To-Be's."

You've clearly acquired much personal experience with 'used to be's" — you know, like: It used to be the guy down the block smiled and nodded when I walked by. Now I have to avoid him because he'd just kill me.

When the context changes, Used-To-Be's are just fond memories with no current relevance.

It used to be that I had a career in Clinical Psychology trying help people be less afraid — often less afraid of themselves; certainly less afraid of judgments from those around them.

In the world of Collapse your describing — the one just down that road of time we're all wandering along — fear would just be a way of life. Clinical Psychology — Not so much.

I used to be an athlete. Now in my late 70's with some problematic sequelae from a replaced hip — walking is an issue. I can't run faster than anyone now. When I find myself joyfully running across a grass field now, it's a trigger to remind myself I'm in a dream because that's the only place it can happen.

Here's another Used-To-Be. It's a little bit longer to describe:

You speak of the value of guns. My wife has lots of guns.

As a woman in commercial real estate, she used to show empty warehouses to strangers. She used to carry one with her.

Come to think of it, on a trip back home to the United States from college in Mexico City, she once had to pull an illegal one from under the car seat as some predatory (a retrospective glimpse of our impending potential collapse) gang thought they'd waylay her. They didn't. Turns out that gun her brother-in-law from the city insisted she take, used to be helpful.

Following the gun theme: Once, the Sheriff of a neighboring county offered her and some female associates a safety class, telling them to "bring you guns." She put hers in a suitcase and, when she showed up, he paused, shook his head, and wryly observed, "There's someone here who could take a helicopter out of the sky."

It used to be I imagined the Glock, and the rest of that armamentarium would provide some modicum of safety.

Now I think that's an amusing fantasy. I'm not Charles Bronson and I'm not The Jackal.

I'm not going to sit on my porch and shoot people. It's just not going to happen. Simply — Not.

It used to be I simply assumed humanity would continue after I died.

That inordinately rough human-scape you describe in the ruthless, war-torn environment of Bosnia you survived through makes sense when there's a future — you know, like imagining a future where Assad might fall or where the structures of civilization might be re-constituted in Gaza or where one can emigrate and find refuge in a more intact country.

That is, struggling to survive when things feel hopeless makes sense when there's just a little bit of hope. Just like when there's some food or some fuel or some electricity or some next thing that could change the world back to what it Used-To-Be.

In these situations, at the moment, there used to be possibilities.

Not this time. Not with the Collapse that's inexorably on its way.

So, I'm just going to enjoy what I can while I can — doing things that don't hurt anyone — painting and writing my little picture books — neither of which will matter as things collapse.

It used to be that I sought meaning that mattered in some larger context of society or humanity or — just that it might matter to someone down the line.

But that's because I used to image a future that made sense.

The Collapse that's coming isn't that future.

So, if you're reading this, let's enjoy what we can while we can.

That way, collectively, distributed across the world, there will be little pockets of enjoyment — for a while, at least.

It's probably the best all of us who are disinclined to shoot people can do right now — no matter how compelling our fantasy 'they need killing' might be.

At least that way there will be a little wave of kindness emanating out into our Universe — a little wave of what used to be for some of us who lived for a while.

Great post -- not sure why SS does not email me with all comments on the articles - I get some but not all ... so I am going through them manually...

With respect to people who believe prepping will save the day... I think they believe that all they need to do is survive a few months... or perhaps a year or two... and things will return to Used To Be.... they've been told that collapse will bring a great adventure https://fasteddynz.substack.com/p/the-utter-futility-of-doomsday-prepping

I suppose they believe it will cleanse and cure the diseased carcass that is our current civilization https://fasteddynz.substack.com/p/fuck-everyone-and-everything

But as you point out ... this time is different... there will be no renaissance... there cannot be... we've burned up all the energy .. we've used up all the high concentrations of minerals... and we have poisoned the farms with petro chemicals.... basically we have kicked out all the rungs on the ladder so there will be no return to some sort of bucolic existence... we are doomed

People need to bypass the stages of grief and land on acceptance... that reduces the stress... enjoy what time remains.

Thanks for responding. It's really rather rare but I appreciate the experience when it arises. It's an example of that 'little wave of kindness' I mentioned in the last sentence of my comment. A couple more thoughts:

About Substack not informing you of comments: At the risk of sounding as disillusioned as i feel, I'm struck by all the simple gestures we humans could have collectively offered one another to improve each other's lives in simple ways. Like letting you know when a reader writes a response to one of your pieces. Empathic helpfulness is not baked into the system in the same way algorithmic marketing for 'hits' has been. As you likely know, Cory Doctorow calls it 'enshittification.'

Examples abound. It recently appeared in my Microsoft Word 365 (subscription, of course) where a function I rely on to refine my understanding of language (Smart Lookup - a dictionary function to use in documents) abruptly issued the error message, "We are sorry, but this feature is deprecated." Duplicity at best, cynical attrition of service more likely. I've relied on an app like that since the mid-80's. It's gone.

Secondly, to your point: Acceptance it is. But it's a complex form of the attitude. I am accepting the deprecation of my dreams for society, for my species, and probably for the final few years of my life, but it's a bittersweet, wry, dumbfounded sort of acceptance. It's laced with the kind of head-shaking confrontation with what's being revealed about humanity that I expect to get whiplash. It's a gobsmacked (I really thought the West Wing was a possible political outlook just as I thought intelligence mattered), fascinated, amused, horrified kind of acceptance.

I often land on the Woody Harrelson character, Charlie, standing on the edge of the erupting Yellowstone caldera in 2012: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLqf_IdrMKw&pp=ygUgd29vZHkgaGFycmVsc29uIDIwMTIgeWVsbG93c3RvbmU%3D.

It's like that.

Enjoy our denouement — as best you can. It's been a hell of a ride being alive in this Universe.

Of all the amazing shit I've read and watched this month, your post kept me glued to the screen.

It's super rare to read a first-hand account of SHTF, and to get a realistic glimpse into what it will be like on global scale.

I'm curious about what the "snipers" are doing as you called them. What is the point/goal/strategy in sniping random people on the street? Would they go collect whatever they could find off the corpses at night or what?

This is a ominous warning of how we are sleep walking into our future! Maybe this explains the rise and rise of Trump as divider in chief and wrecking ball, at a time when we have unsustainable debt $35 trillion, and unsustainable social security pension obligations if $70 trillion running out of money by 2030? Maybe that’s why we will have a wrecking ball in the White House with his two AI billionaires ushering us into the 4th Industrial Revolution, a Uyghur Surveillance State with social credits for correct think and retraining camps for the rest. We are already down that rabbit hole!

The "wrecking ball" as you call him is trying to get the massive and unsustainable Federal Government under some kind of control in order to avoid a collapse, not ensure one....which is exactly what will inevitably happen if something isn't done now.

I have no idea if he can do it, it may already be too late to fix things....but at least SOMEONE is finally making the attempt.

Impossible. The only reason the US has not collapsed ... is because the government is pumping a trillion new dollars of debt into the maw every 100 days... and that is only the stimulus that they acknowledge... no doubt there is a lot more happening behind the curtain that they do not tell us about...

This is a brilliantly written article / story which transports you into that world.

Although as a God fearing man, I do not fear what's to come. The following verses spring to mind:

The Lord is my shepherd and I shall not want.

Psalm 23:1

Also,

You will hear of wars and rumours of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Matthew 24:6-13

Now is not the time for fear my brethren. Being based in reality, yes. But not fear.

What we need is resolve, and to stand firm.

And would you rather not have God on your side?

Is it not turning away from God that is to blame for the mess we're in?

Turn to Him and repent, because the times we are in demand it.
